![]() ![]() The criminal trial is a significant institution of social control. ![]() An in-depth assessment of the diverse perspectives spanning the spectrum of legitimacy through to criminality, and the ways in which they intersect with wider medical and social discourses, will be the focus of the paper. In particular, the paper seeks to unpack the ways in which interviewees utilize medical and popular discourses to narrativize either the legitimacy or criminality of their own use. Both medical and popular discourses surrounding the imperative for and normalization of painkillers are explored. ![]() The paper will analyse some of the experiences of participants who identified as aberrant, recreational, or dependent non-medical users in light of the discursive frameworks which inform such subject positions. The paper explores three categories of users the first, ‘aberrant users’ are those for whom non-medical use is regarded as occasional or infrequent, usually to deal with a stressful situation or get a good night's sleep the second, ‘recreational users’ are those who take painkillers for enjoyment, to get 'high' lastly, ‘dependent users’ refers to participants who identified as being addicted to painkillers. This paper explores the perspectives of research participants who use painkillers for reasons other than medically instructed. ![]()
